Classic Pheasant Tail Nymph

Few flies have earned the reputation of the Classic Pheasant Tail Nymph. Originally created by English fly tyer Frank Sawyer, this timeless pattern has become one of the most effective trout flies ever designed. Its slim profile and natural appearance imitate a wide variety of mayfly nymphs, making it a confidence fly on nearly every trout stream in the world.

The Classic Pheasant Tail excels year round, whether you're fishing spring creeks in the Driftless Area, western freestone rivers, or productive tailwaters. Its realistic silhouette and subtle movement make it deadly during mayfly hatches, but it's equally effective as a searching pattern when trout are feeding subsurface.

Fish it under an indicator, as the anchor fly in a euro nymph rig, or beneath a dry fly in a dry dropper setup. Few patterns are as versatile or consistently productive.

Available in Brown and Black in sizes 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18, these color options allow anglers to match a variety of mayfly nymphs and changing water conditions. The traditional brown pattern remains a staple, while the black version excels in low light, stained water, and streams with darker aquatic insects.

First Watch Fly Co. Pro Tip: Fish the Pheasant Tail close to the streambed where mayfly nymphs naturally drift. Focus on riffles, seams, and the heads of pools, maintaining occasional bottom contact for the most natural presentation. During a mayfly hatch, allow the fly to rise at the end of the drift to imitate an emerging nymph—many of the hardest strikes come as the fly lifts toward the surface.

At First Watch Fly Co., every fly is selected because it catches fish, not because it catches anglers.
