Bead Head Midges
Zebra midges are simple, effective imitations of midge larvae and pupae, a primary food source for trout in cold and consistent water. Their slim profile matches the natural size of real midges, while the ribbing adds just enough contrast to help trout find the fly without making it look unnatural.
Black is a natural, confidence color that works in nearly all conditions. Red ruby and rootbeer add subtle contrast and depth, often suggesting bloodworms, emerging pupae, or light-reflecting segmentation. These colors excel in clear water, low light, or when trout are feeding selectively below the surface.
Fish zebra midges dead-drifted near the bottom under an indicator or as part of a tight-line rig. They are deadly as a dropper behind a heavier nymph and shine when trout refuse larger patterns. Because midges are present year-round, zebra midges are not just situational flies—they are foundational patterns every trout angler should carry.
